Welcome to Bloomington

Bloomington is the fourth-largest city in Indiana outside the metropolitan Indianapolis area. With a population of 79,168 as of the 2020 census, this centrally-located city was established in the early 19th century by a group of regional settlers.

Unlike the rest of the state of Indiana which is relatively flat, Bloomington’s topography is comparatively diverse and located on a higher level. It is rich in limestone—the material with which most of the buildings on campus at Indiana University Bloomington, the local university, are built. Because Bloomington isn’t located near many natural water sources, there are several dams and reservoirs constructed in the city.

The major industries in Bloomington and its surrounding county, Monroe County, are primarily those of education, sciences, technology, and manufacturing.

What Makes Bloomington Great?

Known colloquially as B-Town, this booming college city is full of activities—both indoor and outdoor—for everyone. Visit Indiana University’s campus to see why so many have called it the most beautiful campus in the country. Other outdoor activities include spending time on Monroe Lake, walking in the nearby Hoosier National Forest trails or on the shores of Griffy Lake, or golfing on one of our courses built by award-winning architect Steve Smyers.

Bloomington’s diverse downtown is quite walkable and features local stores, restaurants, and venues. The famous Kirkwood Avenue, and the Square, are well-known and with good reason. Bloomington’s nightlife is also vibrant, with live music venues where local and national comedians also perform. Family activities also abound in Bloomington, with unique opportunities for fun at the Urban Air Adventure Park and Classic Lanes Bowling Center.
